Whiplash is a form of sprain or strain occurring in the neck area. Any sharp jerk or jolt can cause whiplash symptoms and the more serious the accident, the more severe the damage and trauma. Road accidents are the most common cause of whiplash injuries. Frequently, these injuries seem minor at the time of the accident, but then worsen over time if left untreated. All neck injuries should be taken seriously. It is imperative that you consult a doctor immediately if you experience any neck pain or discomfort after a car accident. Common whiplash symptoms include :-

  • pain in the neck region
  • dizziness
  • insomnia
  • stiffness in the neck
  • headaches
  • burning, tingling or prickling sensations in the neck of back

If left untreated, whiplash symptoms can worsen with sufferers sometimes developing cognitive or psychological disorders, which may include :-

  • nervousness
  • problems in concentration
  • insomnia or other sleeping problems
  • memory loss
  • clinical depression
  • irritability

Diagnosing Whiplash

Doctors have a number of tools at their disposal for diagnosing whiplash. The primary diagnostic tool is a patient’s medical history and their current whiplash symptoms. A series of physical and neurological tests are also performed and these can determine the extent of the injuries. Serious whiplash symptoms require more intensive testing, with CAT scans, MRI scans and X-rays being used to determine the extent of damage to the vertebrae, ligaments, nerves and muscles of the neck.

Whiplash Injury Claim

If you have been the innocent victim of a car accident and you believe you may have sustained a whiplash injury as a result then you may be able to bring personal injury claim for compensation to cover your pain, suffering and economic losses. A person injury claim will only be successful if you are able to prove that a third party was wholly or partially responsible for the accident. We recommend that you follow these three steps in order to increase your chances for success :-

  1. consult a medical practitioner as soon as possible after the accident
  2. contact a solicitor as soon as possible to help preserve your legal rights
  3. write down as much detail as possible including time, date and place, the parties involved and any witnesses
